Abstract:

Statistical consulting may have great challenges for a new graduate, especially if the clients are from an academic medical setting. These challenges appear in terms of both statistical and non-statistical aspects. A statistical consultant working in an academic medical setting often needs to have knowledge of health databases, statistical expertise in data handling to keeping all confidentiality and privacy guidelines into account, and creativity in analytics. Often during graduate studies in statistics, there is little training provided on handling medical data. Understanding the medical problem, handling big data, producing results/manuscripts in a timely fashion, and explaining statistical results to non-statisticians requires continuous skill development and improvement. This poster presentation highlights some of the particular training and skills needed for a new graduate to start working as a statistical consultant in academic medical setting.
