Author(s): Brandon George*

Keywords: Teaching; Graduate teaching; Flipped classroom; SPSS; Alternative teaching
Abstract:

Background: Modern public health graduate students pose challenges when teaching statistics, including a large range of experiences with statistics, limited time, and evolving familiarity with technology.

Methods: Online learning resources have been developed for teaching both fully online and flipped courses. Instruction is done using Panopto videos of lectures and tutorials for using SPSS, and engagement is done using weekly quizzes, practice problem sets, discussion board posts, and homework assignments through Blackboard Learn.

Results: The transition of instruction to online videos provides students full control over the pace of their learning, slowing the pace to learn details of using statistical software and accelerating it for those with time constraints. In-lecture quizzes allow for active learning. Use of Blackboard Learn assignments can provide immediate feedback to correct errors and provide affirmation. Practice problems give students additional experience in a setting where they can get needed assistance.

Conclusion: Utilizing online instruction may better meet student needs and when used with active learning lead to better student experiences and performance.
