Title: Statistical Quantification of Colocalization via Optimal Transport

Abstract:

The quantification of colocalization is important in biology to investigate whether two proteins in question interact in a cell. In times of super-resolution microscopy well established methods for diffraction limited light microscopy to quantify colocalization fail. We discuss the fallacy of several of such methods for STED microscopy and illustrate their performance in simulations and on protein structures in the mitochondrion. We propose a method that is based on the solution of the optimal transport problem between two estimated protein densities. Our method also gives information about the colocalization on different spatial scales.
