Title: Ideas for Creating and Teaching Online Biostatistics Courses for Those with Limited Resources
Author(s): Michael Jiroutek*

Keywords: health sciences; biostatstics; online education
Abstract:

Online education in biostatistics is in its infancy relative to the long history of the discipline. As online education continues to expand, many institutions with traditional 'seated' biostatistics courses are seeking to reformat them into an online paradigm. While larger institutions and programs often have extensive resources such video editing capabilities, recording studios, instructional design personnel and budget line items specifically for online education costs, in most cases the resources available to create and maintain online courses are much more limited. As the lone statistician at my institution, with minimal financial and online education support available to me, ingenuity was required to ensure the quality of the courses I sought to create. In this presentation, I'll discuss my path to building rigorous, quality online biostatistics courses, dictated by both my limited resources and those of my students. I'll also present low budget but effective solutions for exam security, administering and grading hand-written exams completed remotely and un-proctored, low-tech methods for presenting material, non-standard discussion board ideas, thoughts on software, etc.
