Title: Areal Extremes: An Analysis of the Areal Impact of Heat Waves in Conterminous US

Keywords: areal extremes; heat waves; return levels; generalized Pareto distribution; peaks over threshold; extreme temperatures
Abstract:

We study daily temperature records for a span of 100 years for the coterminous US. These data are used to fit a model for the areal impact of extreme heat waves. The model can be used to predict the m-year return levels for the proportion of the US affected by such heat waves. The effect of important covariates such at the El Ninho South-pacific Oscillation and the season are estimated and incorporated in the model.
