Naturalistic driving data, given its versatility, has the potential to inform and resolve a variety of traffic safety, operations, reliability, and management research questions and issues. For many of these applications, however, the full power of the naturalistic driving data resides in the availability of locations, routes, and times within it. While relatively easy to collect, these data elements also can reveal sensitive information about participants in the underlying studies, who in most cases are promised anonymity. Researchers using naturalistic driving data must be aware of the data utility vs. privacy tradeoffs that must invariably be made with naturalistic driving datasets, particularly when widespread data dissemination and sharing are desired. This presentation will provide some examples of data use that have been developed with the SHRP 2 Naturalistic Driving study and which will showcase some of the necessary utility vs. privacy compromises. Examples of information that can be gained from location records, and the ease with which such information can be obtained given widespread online tools, will also be discussed.
