Title: Statistics Education Across the University: a Systematic Review
Author(s): Aimee Schwab-McCoy*
Companies: Creighton University
Keywords: Introductory statistics; Statistics education; Non-statisticians
Abstract:

Undergraduate statistics education has experienced a transformation over the past twenty years with advances such as the introduction of the GAISE College Report, movement toward simulation-based inference, and development of a "consensus curriculum". However, the reality remains that at many institutions statisticians do not carry the primary responsibility for undergraduate statistics courses. Instead, "Stat 101" may be housed in diverse departments such as biology, sociology, psychology, or business, and is often taught by non-statisticians - leading to wide variation in pedagogy and content. Given recent academic debates surrounding statistical inference, replication, and "p-hacking", it is necessary to improve our understanding the state of statistics education across the entire curriculum.

This talk will present preliminary results of a systematic review of current statistics education research and trends outside of statistics. By reaching a better understanding of the state of statistics across the curriculum, we can identify areas for improvement (both in statistics/mathematics departments and out) and potential collaboration and partnerships with non-statisticians.
