Abstract:

The tragic tale of the Flint water crisis is well-known. It is a story of the importance of collecting data to provide authorities with the information needed to make public policy decisions that impact the lives of many. This poster will describe an activity/assignment for your introductory statistics students using actual data on lead levels in Flint water samples. Students compute percentiles and create graphs to illustrate the deadly effect that resulted when state and city officials omitted just two observations. The data were obtained from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) by a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
