Title: Importance of Development of Soft Skills for Career Development for Statisticians in a Collaborative Environment
Author(s): Jayawant Mandrekar*
Companies: Mayo Clinic
Keywords: Career Development; Communication; Collaboration; Leadership
Abstract:

Demand for statisticians continues to increase due to rapid growth in big data, predictive analytics, data science etc. Focusing only on mastering new statistical methods and software is not enough to build and advance effective collaborations. On the contrary, they need to strengthen their communication skills, develop a strong collaborative attitude, showcase leadership potential and become effective mentors. Traits like teamwork, project management, delegation and multitasking are crucial to sustain and increase funding opportunities in the tight financial environment. Leadership skills are essential to build effective teams, aid in conflict resolution, enable creative problem solving and assist with strategic planning. This round table session will touch upon these aspects using insights from the speaker's own experience. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences with the group.
