Abstract #326934 Presentation
Title: The Lean Course: Open and Collaborative Online Course Development
Author(s): Sean Kross*

Keywords: online course; teaching; data science; course development; open source

The massively open online course revolution has taken its first sweep through the statistics community and there appears to be something left to be desired in terms of how it has changed (or not changed) teaching practices. The dream that every professor would take their great course and put it online to enlighten the world did not come to pass. Even those who did translate their in-person courses into online formats did so with varying success. Online course creation requires a different workflow from the data analytic work that is typical in our field. It can be difficult to share and collaborate on course materials using only the online course platforms that have become "traditional." In this presentation we'll discuss an alternative set of practices for creating online courses with a focus on ameliorating these issues, including how to create, share, and iterate on a course using only free, fundamental, and open source data science tools. We will share examples where these practices have enabled a dramatic increase in our ability to share knowledge and educate folks online at zero cost to students. Finally we'll talk about how you can get started creating your own course.
