Author(s): Mary J Kwasny*

Keywords: Applied statistics; Career development; Consulting
Abstract:

Redux is an adjective meaning "brought back" or "restored." While this talk will not encourage publication of multiple renditions of analyses, it will encourage reusing older data when possible for new applications. Collaborations for an academic medical center biostatistican have a good deal of ebb and flow - or hurry up and wait. Additionally, thanks to enthusiastic collaborators and dedicated journal reviewers, who may or may not be in the field of statistics, specific analyses or techniques are often being suggested. These two motivational opportunities ensure that a statistician can continue to keep her statistical skills sharp. The first can provide dedicated time to learn new methods via discussions with colleagues, programs such as Data Camp, webinars and statistical conferences, while the later encourages reactive research efforts via Google, JSTOR, and yet more discussions with colleagues. This presentation will highlight examples of why and what I learned and how older data can be repurposed to assist in that learning process.
