Abstract:

Statistical volunteering in the growing Data For Good movement offers unique opportunities to strengthen our skills while making a difference. Through volunteering, consultants broaden their knowledge and gain practical experience in new techniques - something that can be very limited in professional situations, which often focus on the same handful of methods used over and over for a commercial product. Statistical volunteering is a great way to try out a wider variety analytic tools and gain experience in emerging technology. This presentation shares experiences from volunteering for local charities, NGO's such as Statistics Without Borders and DataKind, and thorough work. The focus is on volunteer experiences that offer the opportunity to keep our skills sharp and learn new statistical tools and methods while making an invaluable contribution to good causes.
