Title: Graphics and Data Visualizations to Enhance Storytelling: Revealing Rather Than Obfuscating

Abstract:

Our understanding and intuition regarding the data is guided by visualization, leveraging the essentially visual nature of human comprehension. It is more important today given the increase in size and dimensionality of the data, which precludes visual inspection and understanding of the actual data. Creative visualization platforms have developed both in terms of visualizing large datasets as well as providing dynamic and enhanced capabilities to explore data and receive metadata during exploration. These platforms and software enhance our knowledge and appreciation of the data as well as identify nuances in pattern than could be obfuscated by tabular presentations or by modeling strategies. In this presentation I will present different ways of dynamically presenting data in visual formats from the experience of myself and colleagues.
