Abstract:

Increasingly the phrase "Machine Learning" is becoming the new buzzword throughout business. This trend is also apparent in the pharmaceutical industry. Increasingly, our customers are asking for a machine learning solution to their problems without truly understanding what machine learning entails. There is a lot of promise in machine learning but it also comes with potential peril. As a statistician in pharmaceutical industry, we cannot ignore this promise of machine learning. We need to be able to speak to when it is appropriate and inappropriate to apply machine learning. I will give example of where machine learning was applied in the pharmaceutical industry and discuss the potential benefits and potential dangers of such applications.
