Recently much attention has been paid to improving the accuracy of measuring sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. In prior research, sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) were assessed in a single item rather than being studied as distinct constructs (e.g. sexual attraction, sexual identity, gender identity) often leading to flawed estimates. Language may also pose measurement challenges. Evidence suggests that Spanish speakers may experience additional comprehension problems. This presentation will share findings from two rounds of cognitive tests of SOGI items to support development of the third wave of the National Survey of Youth in Custody (NSYC-3). Gender identity was asked using a two-step measure comparable to that used on the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), and sexual orientation was asked as two questions. The first round included two waves of testing with both adjudicated youth and non-adjudicated youth who identify as SGMs. The second round was conducted in Spanish among adjudicated youth. The presentation will discuss key findings, how questions were modified for each wave, and considerations for future SOGI measurement among adolescents.
