Abstract:

Data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey will be analyzed utilizing primarily visualization approaches to determine relationships and trends. This semester, student groups from a School of Education introductory course in Data-driven Decision Making competed to determine the entry that is submitted to the JSM 2017 based upon relevance of the data selection, proper deployment of statistical tools, and visualization impact. Although all students are invited to attend the meetings, winning team members will be particularly encouraged to help present their entry. This year's winning entry explores consumer income and expenditures in relation to six education levels. For selected income and expenditure categories, graphs motivate observations that receive support from the research literature.
