Abstract:
|
This analysis will produce estimates on the U.S. population living in rural communities and examine demographic and disability status by race and ethnicity using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, Public Use Microdata Sample (ACS PUMS 2012-2015) and U.S. Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service (USDA ERS). For this study, rural will be classified as nonmetro PUMAs and the analysis will be restricted to adults age 18 or older enrolled in Medicare-only or dually enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. Findings from this study will highlight the diversity and unique characteristics of the federally insured population who live in rural communities. Examining the differences in disability status and demographic characteristics by race and ethnicity among rural dwelling Medicare beneficiaries will contribute to the growing literature on the relationship between place and health. This information will also support the development of tailored interventions to address disparities in rural communities and assist in the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services for vulnerable populations and help achieve equity for all Americans.
