Beyond conducting excellent research or completing tasks, there are many components to building a successful career in statistics/data science, which are not all taught in a classroom. One way to grow professionally is to closely and effectively connect with professional societies. They can provide support, knowledge, and community beyond one's graduate school cohort if one seeks them out. They facilitate valuable networking outside of one's current work and enable resume building through participation in an organization. I'll draw from my experiences with several flagship societies to highlight how each of them can help build a career, and increase involvement in the statistical/data science community. These flagship organizations will include the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS), the International Statistical Institute (ISI), and the Caucus of Women in Statistics (CWS) as well as other focused societies, time permitting.
