In 1993 Norm Breslow published a seminal paper with David Clayton on techniques for fitting the generalized linear mixed model (JASA 1993), The paper beautifully illustrated the breadth of scientific contexts where the methods could be applied. In this talk we will reflect on how this paper was emblematic of Norm's passion for biomedical science, statistics, and adventure. The legacy of Norm's leadership and scholarship are clearly evident today, and we will comment on select aspects of his professional and personal impact.
