Abstract:
|
It is known that Lowe Syndrome affects intracellular mechanisms that are involved in cell control and movement. For example, it is found that the golgi complex is fragmented in cells from patients who have this disease. It has also been noted that these cells have membrane ruffling difficulties that cause a wide variety of symptoms within the patients. We are studying the colocalization patterns of the golgi complex and the cell's nucleus as based on the different mutations in DNA that contribute to Lowe syndrome, in hopes of better-understanding which genetic mutations cause which symptoms. We are also the exploring the mechanism of cellular spreading in patient cells as well as the effects of drug molecules on this mechanism. We are using statistical analysis to see and confirm trends in the data. This work is supported by NSF grant DMS # 1246818.
