Abstract:

The Consumer Expenditure Survey Public-Use Microdata is a rich source of information about the spending habits and income of Americans, but accessing this information can be difficult for those without programming skills. To solve this problem, we developed an interactive, web-based data visualization tool which can be used to quickly view trends and generate hypotheses. We demonstrate the use of this tool for several expenditure categories and perform a more in-depth exploratory data analysis of year over year differences in transportation expenditures and their relationship to fuel price and vehicle cost information.
