Abstract:

The past decade has seen a boom in the number of statisticians taking positions with sports governing bodies and clubs. As statistical thinking is becoming more valued by a variety of stakeholders in sport--coaches, managers, and commentators, etc.--more and more sports statisticians are having to juggle multiple roles and communicate their work to increasingly diverse audiences. In this talk, I will discuss the three common spheres today's sports statisticians occupy--academia, industry and the media--and the challenges and opportunities each presents. The presentation will include a number of examples from my own experience as a statistical researcher in a sports science program at Victoria University and data scientist with Tennis Australia, where I have developed a number of real-time analytics products that operate during the Australian Open. Partnerships between industry and academia are invaluable for advancing statistical work in sport, but requires a complex balancing act for statisticians seeking a career in sport.
