Title: Explaining Statistics to Non-Statisticians
Author(s): Heather Smith* and Eric Vance

Keywords: Communication ; Collaboration ; Nontechnical skills
Abstract:

Statistics is widely used across business, academia, and government. Yet many statistical concepts are complicated, subtle, and difficult to grasp even by trained statisticians, let alone non-statisticians. For all statisticians who work with non-statisticians, whether they be clients, collaborators, or students, explaining statistical concepts, methods, and results is an essential non-technical skill. In this session we will discuss and demonstrate the ADEPT method, a method statisticians could use to improve their explanations of statistics to non-statisticians. Once back home, attendees will be able to use this method when collaborating on projects or when teaching students, improving the attendees' ability to communicate their statistical ideas.
