Much of the support for statisticians working in public health derives from grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Yet, many are unfamiliar with the process by which those grants are selected for support. Understanding the review process will aid participants' ability to successfully compete for grant support. Approximately 70% of the grant applications that NIH receives each year are reviewed in scientific review groups (SRGs) within the Center for Scientific Review (CSR). These include investigator-initiated applications (e.g., for R01 grants) and those to specialized funding opportunity announcements (FOAs). Each of these SRGs is managed by a scientific review officer (SRO). The facilitator has been a scientific review officer within the CSR Population Sciences and Epidemiology (PSE) Integrated Review Group (IRG; i.e., group of SRGs) since 2005; prior to that she was an NIH program officer (PO), and, prior to that, a successful grant applicant. She will describe and answer questions about the NIH grant review process. The roundtable is appropriate for all those interested in NIH scientific peer review regardless of background or experience.
