Author(s): Stephen Blumberg*
Companies: National Center for Health Statistics
Keywords: Health surveys ; Questionnaire design
Abstract:

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is one of the federal government's principal sources of information on the health of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. In 2018, the NHIS content and structure will be updated to better meet the needs of data users, improve the measurement of covered health topics, reduce respondent burden by shortening the length of the questionnaire, harmonize overlapping content with other federal health surveys, and establish a long-term structure of ongoing and periodic topics. This will be the survey's first major content update in almost twenty years. This talk will provide an introduction to the NHIS, highlight the challenges that motivated the redesign, describe the redesign process up to this point (including stakeholder engagement and public comment periods), and present an overview of the new questionnaire structure and content.

Authors who are presenting talks have a * after their name.
