Author(s): Michael Jadoo*
Companies: Bureau of Labor Statistics
Keywords: data science ; statistical literacy
Abstract:

More individuals are entering in professions related to data science. Data science is an interdisciplinary field about statistical and scientific methods along with computer systems to extract knowledge from data in various forms. In our modern workforce professionals with advanced degrees are no longer expected to contribute their skills in statistics towards the office's mission. Now mid-to-lower level positions must contribute as well. Data science professions require more knowledge about statistics to make their end product better for their customers. In this discussion we will talk about improvements that can be made to increase the skills sets of professionals in the field of data science. Academic faculty and professionals in the field of data science and statistics are encouraged to come and participate. However, this discussion is open to anyone and would like to participate and provide input. We will address the following questions then open the floor up to the audience for more discussion. What fields do you think need more educational resources in statistics? What is currently being done to help professionals understand statistics better?
