SPAN yielded a representative data at the (i) Texas state level, (ii) six health service regions(HSR), and (iii) border counties. A complex survey design was implemented incorporating a multi-stage probability sample at the state level, 12 strata (6 HSR*urban/rural areas) as well as by three major racial/ethnic groups: African American, Hispanic and White/Other. For the 2015-2016 academic year, the Texas Education Agency provided three sources of data were used for the sampling frame: (i) school-level data (i.e. name of the school districts, enrollment, location, grades offered, etc), (ii). Enrollment information by sex and ethnicity for each school and grade and (iii) the number of children whose family qualified for federal assistance programs. This paper provides an overview of the design, sample size calculations, methods, sampling weights, and post-adjustment considerations The prevalence of obesity by grade and by (i) state level, (ii) six (HSR), and (iii) border counties area in Texas will be reported.
