Statisticians routinely encounter design problems as a facet of our technical work. As traditional statistical training emphasizes experimental design, statisticians feel well equipped to tackle these technical challenges. Statistical consulting and collaboration also involve a variety of project and program management skills that can be acquired through training, but require experiential learning to master. Traditional and agile methods of project management, organizational politics, and design thinking provide tools that can help statisticians to address these management challenges. Such tools are increasingly helpful as our daily quantitative work continues to evolve, including collaborating with a greater variety of quantitative and subject matter experts. I will illustrate these tools with examples from the Children's Core for Biomedical Statistics, a collaborative statistical unit at Seattle Children's Research Institute, a partner in The Institute of Translational Health Sciences, a Clinical and Translational Science Award.
