In this roundtable discussion, we will discuss several recent advances in precision medicine, especially in machine learning, individualized treatment discovery, dynamic treatment regimes, and sequential multiple assignment randomized trials (SMARTs). Some of the most important early clinical applications of SMARTs were in mental health for the purpose of discovering dynamic treatment regimes tailored to an individual patient's characteristics, including past response to treatment. In the area of machine learning, we will examine reinforcement learning, including Q-learning, and more recent methods such as outcome weighted learning, among others. Finally, we will discuss potential new applications of these methods to future precision medicine research in mental health research.
