Abstract:

Statistics offer insight for organizational success through data-driven decision-making, relating to this year's theme of "Statistics: It's Essential." However, data-driven decision-making requires data availability to drive the decision-making. In statistical practice, the non-statistical parts of a project can be as demanding as the statistical parts of the work. In this case study, the statistical consulting service at a university department needed information on client use levels.

The service is nominally free to members of the department, in not requiring additional fees on top of existing administrative costs. There was not enough information on whether the service was adequate for the department's needs and was being used equitably. After installing time-tracking software, data was now available by client, division, project, and staffer.

We designed programs in SAS, R, and Python to create a slide deck for our monthly meeting with the unit's leadership. This information assisted them in being able to track heavy users of the service. They were able to see which clients that have outside funding should be approached to contribute more towards the service.
