Abstract:

Wait time in hospital emergency departments (EDs) is a well-documented factor in patient survival. This study analyzes how arrival time such as weekday status and regular business hour status effects wait time experienced in EDs. The issue is important to health workers but hasn't been explored in details in literature. The study uses data from the 2009 cycle of the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, which collects data on visits made to hospital emergency and outpatient departments. For each sampled visit, data are collected on hospital, patient, and visit characteristics, including wait time for ED visits. The study fits Poisson models to the data by using the "discrete wait time" variable as the dependent variable and available hospital, arrival time, patient, and visit characteristics as covariates. Detailed study methods and findings will be presented.
