Abstract:

A panel of current and former Deans and Provosts of Arts and Sciences who are statisticians will share their views and experiences about how to advance the mission of departments of statistics in current university environments. Topics will include strategies to promote statistics and obtain resources, handling the influx of students majoring and taking courses in statistics, interplay of data science and statistics, faculty recruitment and mentoring, exploring new sources and ways to fund statistics departments and what should our graduates bring to the marketplace. Additional topics include creating an intellectual community among statisticians throughout the university and linking programs between statistics and biostatistics for universities having both departments. Panelists include Carnegie-Mellon University Dean of Sciences, Virginia Commonwealth University Dean of Humanities and Sciences, Georgetown University Provost, Texas A&M University former Dean of Science and Oregon State University Dean of Science.
