Abstract:

A major goal of precision medicine is to use information gathered at the time that a patient presents for treatment to help clinicians determine, separately for each patient, the particular treatment strategy that will provide the best expected outcome. In psychiatry, there are many variables, including those derived from various brain imaging modalities, that may allow for the discovery of information vital to predicting response to treatment. But of more direct clinical relevance, we propose and evaluate some strategies for using these variables to guide the choice of treatment, with this choice being specific to each patient. We will present the general problem of using both scalar, imaging, and other functional data to guide patient-specific treatment decisions and describe some general approaches that can be used towards this aim.
