This talk tries to do three things. First, it indulges in some reminiscences about the good old days, when proposals were less numerous and the chances of funding greater, and when surveys were less numerous and the chances of completing an interview were greater. Then, it briefly reviews some research about what motivates people to participate in surveys, and conversely what motivates them to refuse. And finally, it suggests some lines of research that may be useful going forward.
