As statisticians, we nearly always work as part of a scientific team, and our role is vital not to just ensure the optimal analysis is performed, but also to ensure its results and limitations are conveyed clearly. To achieve this goal, we must serve as consultants, but ideally that relationship becomes one of collaborator and colleague. As a consultant, we are brought in to help with a problem, something we may know little about. We may be working with other scientists or nonscientists who know little about advanced statistical methods and may even be intimidated from their previous statistical experiences. Therefore, we must educate one another and gain one another's respect, confidence, and trust. In short, we must build a professional relationship as well as deliver a solution to a problem. One key way is to ask lots of questions, show sincere interest, and illustrate you understand their problem. Attendees will discuss their experiences, sharing examples of what worked and what didn't. Those new to the field of consulting should attend with questions and be prepared to think about their future in the world of consulting.
