Academic medical centers, in addition to providing world-class patient care and educating the next generation of healthcare providers, are vast hubs of research activity. As a statistician/biostatistician at such a center, I appreciate the variability of my work. Biostatisticians play a critical role on many research teams as we work with a wide array of individuals (faculty members, medical residents, students, and community members, both local and around the world) on a wide array of subjects (breast cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, health behaviors, clinical practices, etc.) Studies vary in size from those with only a few patients to studies of Medicare data that may include millions of records. Depending on the study we may be asked to help with study design, data collection, data analysis, and the reporting of findings, often in the form of manuscripts in professional journals or conference presentations. With all of this variation, we do have one constant: every day we are doing important work that will directly improve the health and well-being of the world around us.
