Abstract:
|
There is a great interest in ranking journals. There are many reasons for this. E.g. publishing in higher ranked journals increase your chances of employment in academia and tenure track but ranking of journals are also important for universities and departments as funding may depend on the number of publications and the rank of them (which is the case in Sweden). From a statistical point of view the uncertainty of rankings are almost never shown. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ranking, and the corresponding uncertainty, of major journals in economics using data from ISI Web of Knowledge for the period of 1998 to 2013 which amounts to a total of 332 journals. The main conclusion is that the ranking amongst the best journals are very precise while the uncertainty increase with lower rank.
