The community state type (CST) has been used as a construct for summarizing microbiome communities observed in the human vagina and the human gut. We conduct a re-analysis of longitudinal 16S rRNA data derived from vaginal samples to evaluate the utility of the CST concept. Results are presented regarding the consistency of CSTs across datasets, the expected persistence for CST states, the ability to predict upcoming CST changes, and the presence of bacteria indicating an upcoming CST change.
