Abstract:

We share some teaching strategies and practices that we have recently applied in statistics classes. Over a period of several years, we recognized numerous issues and challenges that our students face, some of which are specific to students of a small campus. Our strategies focused on some specific challenges such as students' inability to relate to statistical concepts, their daily unpreparedness in the classroom, and their reluctance to participate in the classroom due their introvert nature and fear of failing. The strategies appear to have positive impact on student learning in terms of higher class participation and appreciation for the content as well better student preparedness. In this paper we also share some of the challenges we face in implementing such strategies and how we seek to improve our approach.
