Our university recently began offering a bachelor's degree in data science. One of the required courses for this major is a course on data summary and visualization. Fall Semester 2015 was the first time this course was offered at our university. Developing the curriculum for this course presented many unique challenges including determining the amount of in-class software support to give, how to develop assessments, and how to teach creativity and best practices in data visualization. In this talk, I will discuss the challenges and triumphs experienced in developing this course and offering it for the first time. I will also describe course structure and assessments, software used, reflections on the course overall, and ideas for improvement in future offerings.
