Abstract #318944
Title: Making a Powerful First-Day Impression
Author(s): André Michelle Lubecke*
Companies: Lander University
Keywords: First day of class
Abstract:

The first day of class is an important one. It sets the tone for the entire course. If students are immediately exposed to the power of statistics, perhaps they will be more inclined to spend time and energy learning the subject. Through videos captured from news programs, a discussion of some experimental results, and a classroom simulation of an experiment, I try to communicate to students how statistical studies add to our knowledge base and have an impact on our lives. Come learn the details of how I spend my first hour in statistics class and share your best ideas for an effective and meaningful first meeting with students.
