Title: Communicating Our Value: Are You a Tipping Point Maven?
Author(s): Susan Duke*
Companies: AbbVie
Keywords: tipping point ; statistician value ; communication ; innovation ; change
Abstract:

Do you find that nonstatistician colleagues too often don't get what biostatisticians do? You're in good company! As a biostatistician involved in innovation and change, perhaps you have pondered this. Are we, as statisticians, mavens (information brokers), in the words of Tipping Point author, Malcolm Gladwell? Gladwell elucidates three types of people who facilitate the change, or tip, to a new way of doing things: maven, connector, and salesperson. Mavens connect with information (in our world, that's clinical data); connectors connect people; and salespersons know how to package ideas and persuade. Does this idea resonate with you? Could it be that biostatisticians are the informational 'glue' that connects within our organizations? The goal of this roundtable is to spend a few minutes introducing these concepts, with the remainder of the time spent discussing participants' experiences. The best way to make change happen is to understand how it works and be part of the solution.
