The Survey of Young Workers is an initial inquiry into the work experiences and expectations of young workers. Young adults in the United States have experienced higher rates of unemployment and lower rates of labor force participation than the general population for at least two decades. Data suggest that young workers entering the labor market are affected by a long-running increase in the use of "contingent" work arrangements. The Survey of Young Workers was administered by GfK (formerly Knowledge Networks), an online consumer research company. The survey was conducted using a sample of adults between the ages 18 to 30 from the KnowledgePanel®, a proprietary, probability-based web panel of more than 50,000 individuals from randomly sampled households. The young adult respondents were asked to describe three distinct aspects of their employment path: (1) education and training; (2) experience as a paid employee; and (3) self-employment activities. Respondents were instructed to answer questions about each of these aspects of their workforce path independently.
