Abstract:

We applied a Bayesian structured additive regression modeling approach with Markov Random Fields priors taking spatial heterogeneity into account to conduct a mediator analysis for identifying whether physical inactivity mediates the association between diabetes and poverty by using the following data sources from 2005-2012: BRFSS and ACS. We also conducted an advanced spatial analysis revealed spatially varying associations between physical inactivity and diabetes as well as poverty and physical inactivity. The two spatial analytic findings conduct a total of 1173 (37.76%) counties where residents were vulnerable to diabetes because of insufficient physical activity, while poverty should be a possible reason causing the lack of physical activity. In summary, the findings of this study demonstrate the mediating effect of physical inactivity between diabetes and poverty in the presence of spatial heterogeneity. When implementing diabetes prevention in communities with higher poverty, we need to consider appropriate strategies to reduce the cost burden of physical activities.
