Title: Learning Communities: An Emerging Platform for Research in Statistics
Author(s): Mark Daniel Ward*

Abstract:

At Purdue, our sophomore undergraduate students are learning about data science as part of a comprehensive learning community experience. This setting enables students to learn about data science at a very early point in their career. The students are simultaneously engaged in year long research projects while they are learning about data science. This structure allows our students to become very comfortable with the tools that data scientists use in their work. Our experience gives students a team-oriented, project-based opportunity to dive in to large data sets. We will reflect on our experiences working with students in such an environment. We publicly share all of the materials we have developed for this approach to learning data science. We encourage our colleagues to build on the modules that we have developed. This talk is an introduction to our approach for data science at the undergraduate level.

Authors who are presenting talks have a * after their name.
