Title: Developing a Comprehensive Data Science Program
Author(s): Mark John Lancaster*
Companies: Northern Kentucky University
Keywords: data science ; business informatics ; computer science ; mathematics ; statistics ; transdisciplinarity
Abstract:

The undergraduate data science program at Northern Kentucky University embraces the concept of "transdisciplinarity." While the program is housed in the Computer Science department, our data science program requires the full support of three departments that comprise the core of the program: Business Informatics, Computer Science, and Mathematics & Statistics. In this presentation, the balance between existing courses from these departments and the new data science courses is explored, along with our development of learning outcomes for the program. Our first cohort of undergraduate data scientists will enter their senior year in the fall semester of 2016, and our current plans for those final data science experiences and the underlying philosophy of data science (including a capstone experience) is examined.
