Title: The ASA DataFest: Learning by Doing
Author(s): Robert Gould*
Companies: University of California at Los Angeles
Keywords: data science ; undergraduate ; hackathon ; competition ; education ; big data
Abstract:

The ASA DataFest is a "data hackathon" in which teams of undergraduates work, in the space of one very intense weekend, on a challenging, rich dataset to find and communicate meaning. The data are timely and have many characteristics associated with 'big data'. The questions posed by the data providers are real. Students expand their range and repertoire while working under a deadline with guidance and wisdom provided by local data professionals. ASA DataFest provides an opportunity for the larger data community -- statisticians, computer scientists, software engineers, and others working in data-soaked fields-- to come together, and provides students an opportunity to gain an important introduction to their professional futures.
