Abstract:

The Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report encourages instructors to create an active learning environment in their classrooms and to use assessments as a means of gauging conceptual understanding of course content. When instructors work with large class sizes, it becomes more challenging to create a student-centered environment and to include particular types of questions on assessments with regular feedback. In this panel session, four instructors who teach and coordinate large introductory statistics courses will discuss the challenges involved in working with large classes and strategies they have implemented at their universities to deal with these challenges. Topics to be discussed include how large courses can aim to meet the GAISE recommendations. Addition attention will be given to developing professionalism and good teaching practices among graduate teaching assistants. There will also be some discussion of teaching large online courses, including MOOCs.
