In recent years, statisticians working with non-statisticians have often heard that they should be "collaborating" rather than "consulting". In this talk, I will explore the differences between consulting and collaboration and propose definitions, with particular attention given to the role that statisticians play in research processes. I will discuss the importance of this distinction and will examine outcomes particular to "consulting", which is primarily concerned with statistical questions and answers, and "collaboration", which is concerned with answering research or business questions. I will highlight methods for incorporating collaborative practices into client engagements, and audience members will be encouraged to go beyond consulting to strive for collaboration in their own interactions to maximize their impact.
