Abstract:

Books can be burned, but ideas can not, so book banning efforts fail over and over again. Someone is always eager to tell other people what they may not read. We'll skim briefly through the trial of John Peter Zenger in 18th century New York and discuss the various reasons Huckleberry Finn has been under siege ever since it was first published in the late 19th century. We'll look at some scandalous children's picture books and efforts to make the federal government the instrument of censorship. The closest parallels to the current banning of How to Lie with Statistics are hilarious. Let's hear it for the First Amendment!
